Abstract

To improve product development efficiency and gain a competitive advantage, today’s engineering design needs untraditional product development tools. A design process driven by optimization can play an increasingly important role to accelerate innovation by unleashing human as well as “machine” creativity.

Today, with advanced technologies for structural topology optimization, morphing, dynamic modeling in CAD, and flexible CAE, the computer is capable of generating conceptual designs as well as robustly optimized products. The next frontier is the integration of the power of CAD/CAE and topology optimization technologies. This combination will make CAD a true design exploration, synthesis and multi-disciplinary design tool. It would mean high-performance product innovation and shorter time-to-market. Optimization-driven design can help to develop structural sound, lightweight products by applying the most advanced optimization methods to solve the design problem. By predicting optimal shapes of structures with minimum input early in the process, the design system facilitates analysis to lead the design process which results in innovative concepts and more efficient designs in less time. Optimization-driven design methodology generates structurally optimal design concepts from supplied packaging information, loads, constraints and required product performance and manufacture conditions. With CAD/CAE integration, product and business objectives can be achieved considerably faster than conventional design practices.
